CTE's Pag-GIYA (Guiding and Interacting with the Youth Towards Math and Reading Achievement)

SDGs Sustainable Development Goals

La Salle University Ozamiz's College of Teacher Education (CTE) launched Pag-GIYA (Guiding and Interacting with the Youth towards Reading & Math Achievement), a service-learning program aimed at addressing critical academic gaps in reading and mathematics among Grades 3-6 pupils at Maningcol Central School, aligning with the SDG 4 mandate for inclusive, quality education. The program, championed by a team including the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and led by BEEd Program Head Dr. Jenel S. Cruz and BTLEd Instructor Ms. Jumelah G. Padilla, strategically deploys preservice teachers as facilitators to provide targeted, hands-on tutoring focused on weaknesses identified by pre-assessments (e.g., PHIL-IRI, fractions, geometry). This initiative operates as a dual-impact model, simultaneously achieving significant academic remediation for the pupils—evidenced by increased mathematical and reading comprehension scores and the transition of students from Frustration to Instructional/Independent reading levels—while fostering the professional identity of future teachers. The preservice teachers gain invaluable, resilient experience, improving their teaching skills, confidence, and adaptability in a resource-constrained, real-world setting. Despite facing significant structural and environmental constraints—including a flood-prone venue, lack of digital infrastructure, and institutional confusion regarding SL policy—the program's success is sustained by the unwavering commitment of its stakeholders. This dedication has earned it multiple awards as an Outstanding Stakeholder from the Division of Ozamiz City Department of Education. However, its institutional sustainability is challenged by a lack of formal policy and resource allocation clarity, contrasting with the high moral and symbolic support received, which necessitates a structured policy intervention to institutionalize its award-winning model.
